CHINATOWN SHOWBOAT GIVES BACK ON THE WATER AND LAND FOR FESTIVAL CHARITIES (JUNE 2016)

For Team Chinatown Showboat, it’s less about what happens on the water during the Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival and more about what happens year-round on land. 
The team of paddlers, made up of residents from south Ottawa, Nepean and west Ottawa, have generated $130,000 since their inaugural year on the water in 2002. This year, the team has so far raised more than $12,000 towards its $20,000 goal in support of the festival’s many Ottawa-based charities.

Dragon boat festival fills mooney's bay with team spirit (June 2015)

In the summer time, Ottawa has a multitude of festivals. Big, small, loud, quiet — you’re sure to find one that floats your boat.
In some cases, literally.
The 22nd annual Tim Hortons Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival saw a great turnout Saturday, buoyed by good weather and some close, entertaining races.

Dragon boat team pairs with brewery for charity beer (May 2015)

You can work up a powerful thirst while paddling, but that’s not the reason one dragon boat team is crafting specialized suds.
Chinatown’s Showboat, a Centretown dragon boat team, has partnered with Stittsville’s Covered Bridge Brewing Company to create a specialty beer to benefit the Ottawa Dragon Boat Association and local organizations.

Unlike many dragon boat team who strive for gold medal glory, Chinatown's Showboat is largely dedicated to paddling for our community and having lots of fun in the process. Sponsored by Ottawa's Chinatown, the team works with paddlers to find ways to give back to the community throughout the year. In addition to finding unique, novel ways to fundraise, paddlers are actively encouraged to volunteer. Since 2002, the team has raised over $120,000 for the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation which in turn supports many local charities.

Centretown Buzz - Chinatown Showboat: paddling for charity (May 2013)

As snow covered the Ottawa landscape earlier this year, thoughts of warm summer days, with dragon boats racing through the still waters at Mooney’s Bay, were probably the furthest thing from most minds. But, in spite of the season, a dragon boat team was hard at work, setting up partnerships to support fundraising. That team is Chinatown’s Showboat.
Dragon boating has an early beginning. More than 2000 years ago, Qu Yuan, an ancient Chinese statesman, was banished from his state after urging his king not to sign a deceiving peace treaty. Humiliated and tormented, Qu Yuan chose to end his life and committed ritual suicide in the Miluo River.
